| ISSUES | |||
| “I think the largest issues for folks are really the ones that hit closer to home. They are not glamorous items, but I’m really pleased that [while serving as a Redondo Beach Councilman,] we were able to take care of little things that really affect people close to home.” - Mike Gin |

| Managing Growth | |||
| Like
communities throughout Southern California, Redondo Beach faces the challenge
of trying to maintain our wonderful quality of life while the pressures
of regional population growth mount. We cannot afford a Mayor who serves
as a “rubber stamp” for developers, nor can we have someone
at City Hall who sticks his or her head into the sand and says “no
to everything.” As your Mayor I will manage growth to minimize any negative effects on our neighborhoods. We cannot allow Redondo Beach to grow faster than our ability to provide infrastructure or public safety. Traffic is a primary concern. I will make sure that any new development –whether it’s residential, commercial or industrial – includes traffic mitigations that go beyond the minimum requirements and integrate into the existing traffic system effectively. |

| Maintaining Strong Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness | |||
| Public
safety will be my top priority as Mayor. Redondo Beach is fortunate to have
highly trained and dedicated professionals in our police and fire departments.
However, we cannot take the quality of these services for granted. The best
trained and most dedicated officers still require the best equipment. It is my belief that our police department can only be as strong as its connection to the community it serves. I will work to ensure that leaders in the police department are active in our community and hearing from residents about issues in their neighborhoods. Our proximity to Los Angeles makes terrorism a serious concern. Unfortunately, the Federal Government is not providing cities with the needed resources they need to accommodate heightened security needs. I will work with neighboring cities, Los Angeles County and our state and federal representatives to ensure Redondo Beach receives every dollar we can find to meet the challenges of the post-September 11 era. |

| Improving Quality of Life in our Neighborhoods | |||
| On
my watch, City services will be responsive to the needs of our residents.
It is a challenge to maintain high levels of service while the State keeps
local tax dollars in Sacramento instead of refunding them to the cities.
But that is a challenge I will tackle head on. Services like garbage pickup,
street cleaning and tree trimming are not only conveniences, they impact
safety and property values. Part of being a leader is the belief that no problem is unimportant and will instill that attitude throughout City Hall. Repairing potholes and cracks in the sidewalk needs to occur in a timely manner. |

| Partnering with Schools to Help our Children | |||
| Schools
are the cornerstones of our neighborhoods and the City should have a stronger
relationship with the School District to find ways to help each other. Studies
have demonstrated that after school programs are a successful way to prevent
crime. Keeping kids in structured activities with positive role models can
help an at-risk child make the right choices in life. To the extent that
we are able, I want the City to look for ways to fund after school programs,
crossing guards and other youth-oriented programs. We should be a meaningful partner with the School District in keeping our children safe and helping them achieve their dreams. When I served on the City Council, I was on the Schools subcommittee. I know how much more we can do with the right leadership at City Hall. |

| Promoting a Strong Economic Climate for our Businesses | |||
| I have worked for many years to encourage business growth in Redondo Beach. By keeping our City in strong financial shape and promoting education in addition to the abundance of cultural and outdoor activities, Redondo Beach is a city that businesses should target for growth or relocation. I will lead that effort. We can streamline the permitting process to help new businesses open more quickly. We must actively recruit the kinds of businesses our residents want in their neighborhoods. I also believe there needs to be a healthy presence of locally-owned businesses in addition to the large chains. Redondo Beach is a unique community and we should be proactive in maintaining that uniqueness. |
